Divorce in Georgia: What you need to know

Sometimes, love fades. It happens. If you were married in Georgia and have now decided to officially get divorced, here’s how the process works.

Important note: in Georgia, it is impossible to “annul” a marriage; you can only file for divorce.

But the good news is that if both partners agree and there are no joint children, shared property, or disputes, the process can be straightforward and completed without a court appearance. We can assist you in formalizing everything.

What is needed for a divorce?

To apply on your behalf, we will need the following:

Two powers of attorney — one from you, one from your (former) spouse.
The powers of attorney must be specifically issued to our representative to file for divorce.
If you are outside of Georgia, the power of attorney must be certified with an apostille in the country where it is issued (if the country is Apostille convention member).
The original powers of attorney must be sent to Georgia by courier. We will handle the translation into Georgian and notarization.

How does the procedure work?

1. We receive the original powers of attorney from you.

2. We translate and notarize the documents.

3. We apply the House of Justice of Georgia.

4. Within 10 working days, we will receive the official divorce decision.

5. If desired, we can legalize the document for your country via an apostille.

What documents will you receive?

2 originals of the divorce decision (in Georgian) — one for each.
2 translations of the decision into the language you need, along with apostille certification from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.
If your country requires embassy certification, we will also provide legalization from the Embassy.

Cost and timeline
